National Recognition

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (VW) has announced that it is recalling certain 2017 Audi A3 and S3 sedans due to improper frontal airbag deployment in low-speed crashes.

The recall involves Audi model A3 and S3 sedans produced between July 2016 and January 2017, an estimated 11,618 vehicles. According to VW, 100% of these vehicles involved in the recall have this defect.

The defect is in the air bag control unit software and causes the passenger side airbag to deploy improperly in lower speed crashes if the passenger is sitting on the edge of the seat or is laying down in the seat in a reclining position. The software contains an inaccurate set of parameters that reads a low-speed crash as a higher speed crash, causing the airbag to deploy more forcefully, which could cause an injury to the front seat passenger.

To correct the problem, affected vehicles must have the airbag control module software updated. The work will be done free of charge to owners under the manufacturer’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty. The recall is expected to begin in April 2017.

Owners of affected Audi A3 and S3 sedans may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 69Q3.

Airbags save thousands of lives every year; however, a defective airbag can cause unnecessary harm to passengers, and those who have suffered injuries as a result of airbag problems may be entitled to compensation for their injuries.

The National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration (NHTSA) maintains a list of all recalled car makes and models on its website as well as a VIN look-up tool that consumers can use to determine whether or not their vehicle is involved in the worldwide recall.
