Essure

The Dangers of Essure Permanent Birth Control

Essure is a popular permanent birth control device that was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2002. Medical products manufacturer Conceptus, who later merged with Bayer in 2013, originally made it. The device works by blocking off the fallopian tubes preventing sperm from reaching an egg.The procedure takes about 10 minutes. Two small, metal coils are inserted inside the fallopian tubes, and over the course of three months, scar tissue grows around the coils, fully blocking off the tubes.Thousands of women claim the device has caused them permanent injuries. Over 5,000 complaints have been reported to the FDA since 2002, and many women have filed lawsuits against Bayer.

Negative Effects of Essure Birth Control

Women who have suffered complications from Essure have banded together on social media, calling themselves “E-Sisters.” The “E-Sisters” and thousands of other women claim that Essure caused them severe trauma including the following complications:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • Device displacement
  • Severe pelvic pain
  • Allergies to nickel
  • Heavy periods
  • Device breakage
  • Weight fluctuations
  • Fatigue
  • Bloating

Severe adverse effects include perforation of the fallopian tube or uterine wall, or embedment in other organs, often requiring a hysterectomy or surgical removal of the device.

Essure Lawsuits

Women who file lawsuits against Bayer claim that their health problems were ignored and Bayer did not properly warn of the risks associated with the procedure. In the cases filed against Bayer, the pharmaceutical company is accused of designing a faulty product, negligence, failure to properly warn the public about health risks, improperly training doctors and more.Because the product went through a rigorous testing process by the FDA before it was approved, Bayer is currently protected from lawsuits by preemption laws. However, accusations that Conceptus violated these laws by withholding data from the FDA might mean that the preemption laws protection will be lifted. A Pennsylvania congressman introduced a bill in November 2015 that could reverse Essure’s protection against product liability and litigation.
